If I were in your place, I would say that fictional inspiration is a powerful driver for travel, creating desires and images, and that tourist guides only offer the practical means to realize these escape dreams.
However, this view fails to recognize that guides can also be the primary source of the desire to travel, not just an appendix.
Often, it is by flipping through a guide on cycling routes in Flanders that one discovers unsuspected picturesque villages, even without a book or a film ever mentioning them.
The guide, through its richness, can thus be the initial trigger of curiosity and adventure, showing destinations with no prior fictional anchor.
