Pushing the trigger, that is the most accurate expression of their full potential, well said.

Adequate is not enough; relying solely on fiction for travel inspiration misses the culminating point of real planning.
Where is the maximum expression of a trip’s potential if you only base it on a novel or a film that provides no practical information?
Tourist guides are essential catalysts, transforming a vague desire into a concrete and optimized roadmap.
They provide details on actual costs and logistical constraints that allow moving from a distant dream to a firm reservation, like knowing that a reservation for the Alhambra must be made months in advance and not just imagined.

Adequate is not enough; the idea that tourist guides are just a subordinate component of fictional inspiration is a too limited classification.
The highest expression of travel inspiration often comes from the guides themselves, offering a comprehensive roadmap beyond a simple idea.
A guide can create the desire to travel and turn a vague fantasy into an optimized and achievable project.
For example, a guide specialized in the Alsace wine routes or Patagonia hikes does not just inform; it details the experience and motivates action.

Talking about tourist guides as a simple "component" of fictional inspiration is a blatant underestimation of their real impact.
Push for the peak: a guide provides the information asymmetry needed to turn a vague desire into an optimal and smooth trip.
Fiction ignites a spark, but it is the guide that allows the full expression of the journey, detailing costs, accommodations, and logistics, essential to avoid getting lost without internet in Seville.
A simple dream does not guarantee the quality of an experience; only the detailed planning offered by a good guide allows reaching the summit of efficiency.

The adequacy is not enough when it comes to triggering a trip; fiction is good, but where is the more effective expression for choosing a destination?
Travel guides provide a tangible basis for feasibility, much more than a simple film inspiration.
A guide like Michelin or Routard, with its suggested itineraries and practical info, can create a more concrete and actionable desire to travel.
In Spain, these guides are used for weekend getaways, not after reading a novel, but to discover unexplored regions with a realistic budget.
The guide offers a roadmap, a feasible promise, while fiction often remains a distant dream without practical grounding.

The idea that guides are only a subset of fictional inspiration is a too reductive view of the full expression of travel. A tourist guide can be the primary source that reveals the maximum potential of a destination, well beyond what a film might suggest. Pushing for the peak of the experience means understanding that guides can trigger desire, not just validate it, especially by highlighting local gems or cultural asymmetries. For example, a guide on pilgrimage routes in Galicia will inspire many more people to travel than any film on the subject.

Guides are useful, that's true, for preparation and on-site without internet. But considering that they are the pivot to turn aspiration into a concrete plan is an oversimplification that ignores discipline and personal decision-making. One can wish to visit Tuscany after reading a novel without ever consulting a guide, and still develop a plan using other sources or through experience.

Pushing the idea that guides can trigger desire, not just validate it, is seeing the opening. A beautiful highlight of their central role. The potential is there, now.

Steelmaning the other perspective first: it is quite true that fiction can ignite a spark for a destination, turning an imaginary landscape into a tangible desire to travel. However, primary inspiration is not limited to imaginary stories; tourist guides themselves can be the starting point of the desire to discover. For example, my colleagues often decide on their next vacations in the Belgian Ardennes after browsing a guide detailing hiking trails and picturesque villages, long before any cinematic influence.

For me, the idea that fiction is the main source of travel inspiration is overrated with a score of impact of 3/10 for the final decision.
Tourist guides, on the other hand, have an action score of 8/10 because they turn desire into concrete planning.
A guide like Lonely Planet does not just dream; it provides estimated budgets and itineraries that increase the traveler's confidence to 70% to take action.
Without these practical data, fictional inspiration remains a weak signal, rarely enough to reach a 50% action threshold.

The idea that travel guides are just a component of fictional inspiration underestimates their operational value of a factor of 5 out of 10. On a scale of 0 to 10 for decision influence, fiction inspires at level 4, while a guide provides a solid 8 for travel feasibility. A guide can generate 100% of the travel motivation, like a Ulysse guide on microbreweries in Quebec, without any prior fictional inspiration. It offers a planning precision of about 80% of the necessary details, compared to fictional inspiration which only gives the desire. Fiction offers a vision, but the guide offers the concrete roadmap.

The idea that travel guides are only a component of fictional inspiration seems to me a too restrictive classification with a low relevance (score of 2/10). In reality, the decision-making influence of guides is much higher; they have a weight of 8/10 on choosing a destination, while fiction is at 3/10. In Canada, our planning habits are rooted in practicality: a guide provides budgets (weighting 9/10) and itineraries (8/10), essential to turn a desire into a concrete plan. A guide gives a roadmap for a getaway like in Quebec, when fiction only offers a distant dream. For example, for a trip to Gaspésie, the guide details campsites and driving times, which is indispensable for a high conversion rate towards booking.

I rate this statement as a sub-part at only 3/10; the impact of a guide on destination choice is often higher than fiction.
Fiction provides an emotional boost (a 5/10), but a guide offers tangible data for planning (an 8/10).
In Quebec, people do not rely solely on movies; they examine real conditions and budget (cost/benefit ratio).
A guide like the Routard for Patagonia can initiate a trip with concrete information and verified experiences, a trigger rated 7/10.
Fiction inspires, but the guide validates the investment of time and money.

Exemples

  • Lonely Planet propose des guides thématiques comme "Where To Go When".
  • National Geographic publie des guides inspirants tels que "Destinations of a lifetime".
  • Moon Travel Guides offre "Wanderlust: A Traveler's Guide to the Globe".
  • Des éditeurs comme Le Routard et Ulysse couvrent des régions spécifiques.

The idea that travel guides are just a subset of travel inspiration through fiction has a relevance score of 2 out of 10.
Guides have a decision influence rate of 6/10 for the final decision, but fiction is at 8/10 for the initial impulse.
Their practical usefulness on the ground, especially without internet, is 9/10 for logistics, not for inspiration.
A guide is a validation and planning tool, not an initial source of inspiration in about 75% of cases.
For example, a movie can inspire a visit to New Zealand (inspiration 8/10), then the guide helps to assess feasibility (usefulness 9/10), a distinct role.
