Let me first acknowledge that the idea that a novel or a film can ignite a spark of curiosity for a place is quite valid; it is an emotional entry point and often powerful. However, reducing tourist guides to a simple sub-part of this inspiration through fiction is an excessive simplification. For many, the destination is set by much more concrete imperatives, such as a job. For example, if a candidate is hired in Belgium, the tourist guide becomes a pragmatic essential tool for navigating transportation or administrative procedures, completely independent of any fiction.
