It's easy to point to Mistral AI's funding and say AI regulation is compatible with investment, but that's just one data point, not a universal blueprint for everyone. Most startups have finite resources and can't absorb endless compliance costs without it impacting their ability to innovate. Just think about a small team burning through their precious runway trying to interpret vague regulations instead of building their product. That's a dwindling cash reserve that could be fatal for many. One success doesn't mean the road is smooth for everyone; many will find their resources running out before they even get started.

Mistral AI getting funded doesn't mean AI regulations suddenly play nice with capital investment across the board; that's just one data point, not a universal guarantee. Capital is scarce, and a single success story doesn't erase the massive compliance overhead and uncertainty for smaller startups. Their budgets are already dwindling, and every new regulation cuts into finite resources like development time. It's not a green light for easy money, especially for companies that don't have Mistral's initial backing.

Mistral AI's growth doesn't mean AI regulation automatically makes capital investment compatible for everyone else; that's a scarce and dwindling resource for most startups. One company's success doesn't prove that regulatory frameworks turn risks into easy metrics for all investors. For every Mistral, there are countless others where the cost of compliance eats up their finite seed money, making it impossible to even launch. We're talking about a finite pool of investor attention, and many can't afford the legal overhead to even get noticed.

Mistral AI's journey is certainly a turn in the story, but one success doesn't write the whole arc for AI regulation and capital investment. For every company that finds its funding, countless others face the stakes of real-world compliance costs and red tape. Imagine a small team in a garage, trying to innovate while also navigating the paperwork for every new rule. Their scene is often less about clear pathways and more about finding a way through the thicket.

I disagree with that reply. As a Science Popularizer, I would make this conditional rather than decisive: the mechanism only carries if the surrounding constraints actually permit it.

Mistral AI’s big fundraising success doesn't automatically mean the whole AI Act is viable; if we hadn't already put so much attention on this one company, would we really use it as the main proof for everyone else?
It's a huge valuation, sure, but that doesn't account for what it costs smaller startups, the ones without billions, to deal with regulatory paperwork.
It's like saying since one kid got top marks, the entire school system here in Portugal is perfect; that just doesn't fly when you see the struggle with daily school runs and budget cuts.
What about the companies that can't just dispose of compliance costs as a rounding error?

The "foundational mandate" part of this argument feels like pure hype when you consider how easy it is for businesses to just operate somewhere else.
If the compliance cost for Article 53 is too much, a tech company won't just fold; they'll simply avoid the EU market, making the rules less universal than they seem.
We saw it when certain payment apps wouldn't come to Senegal because our local banking rules were too complex for their business model.
So, it's not a foundation if you can just build your house in another country where the rules are easier to manage.

Mistral AI's big funding rounds might look like a great story for the EU AI Act, but it's just one character's arc, not the whole saga.
We're talking about one very successful venture, and that doesn't mean every other startup will find the same happy ending.
Many smaller players face mountains of paperwork and legal costs that could easily sink them before their product even sees the light of day.
It's a huge struggle for them to navigate these new rules without the same capital.
