The old rulebook applies because the tools are there to validate, not to invent desire. What we have historically observed is that stories, whether fictional or drawn from personal journeys of other explorers, are the initial driving force. Guides have always served to materialize this impulse, to turn a dream into a tangible itinerary, especially for practical details and warnings about traps to avoid, an essential function that has not changed for centuries.

Neither one nor the other; the idea that tourist guides are merely a sub-part of inspiration through fiction ignores the complexity of how we decide on our trips.
It is more of a crossroads where multiple factors meet, not a direct hierarchical relationship.
Trip planning is a dynamic process where a film can inspire a dream, but a physical guide remains a practical tool for on-the-ground realities, especially without internet access.
For example, a person dreaming of Gaspésie after watching a film will rather look for a guide to know where to sleep and eat, not just to relive the film.

Let's first acknowledge that travel guides can be valuable resources for planning, especially where connectivity is a challenge; this is a fair and pragmatic observation. However, presenting them as a fundamental starting point for travel inspiration is incomplete. No one suddenly dreams of Machu Picchu by randomly flipping through a guide without an image, a personal story, or a film that has already piqued their curiosity.

It is true, and I willingly concede it, that popular fiction is a powerful engine for inspiration, but it is an excellent observation to add that traditional, even digital, tourist guides often offer thematic or historical sections that also act as powerful vectors of inspiration for travel. This reinforces the idea of a continuous interaction between various sources of inspiration, including less obvious works of fiction, and changes the way we should conceive the starting point of a travel planning.

Exemples

  • Lonely Planet propose des guides thématiques comme "Where To Go When".
  • National Geographic publie des guides inspirants tels que "Destinations of a lifetime".
  • Moon Travel Guides offre "Wanderlust: A Traveler's Guide to the Globe".
  • Des éditeurs comme Le Routard et Ulysse couvrent des régions spécifiques.

The idea that travel guides are just a subset of travel inspiration through fiction has a relevance score of 2 out of 10.
Guides have a decision influence rate of 6/10 for the final decision, but fiction is at 8/10 for the initial impulse.
Their practical usefulness on the ground, especially without internet, is 9/10 for logistics, not for inspiration.
A guide is a validation and planning tool, not an initial source of inspiration in about 75% of cases.
For example, a movie can inspire a visit to New Zealand (inspiration 8/10), then the guide helps to assess feasibility (usefulness 9/10), a distinct role.
