The idea that a simple photo of The Wave on a guide cover can "standardize" an entire first trip to the American Southwest seems overly optimistic.
If we hadn't already invested time in believing this, would we still do so today, knowing that a lottery-permit is required to go?
It is concrete research and planning that structure the trip, not just the initial visual impulse, especially for lesser-known places.
Not to mention that you have to register for a lottery months in advance to hope for a spot; the photo doesn't handle that.
