The real challenge here is not just validating a destination, but optimizing the experience. Pushing for the summit means recognizing that the integration of major local events can turn a good trip into an exceptional experience, or conversely, minimize unforeseen inconveniences. It is also necessary to consider the asymmetry of information that can hide unique opportunities, such as underground music festivals that do not appear in traditional guides but attract considerable crowds and strongly influence the local atmosphere.

So, is this hierarchy really stable? My probability that local events are a component always present and always significant in destination validation is low, say 20%.
I update my assessment downward because this relationship is conditional, not universal, and heavily depends on the type of traveler.
A business traveler, for example, has a 90% probability of ignoring local events if their schedule is fixed, making the impact of these events secondary.
However, if going to a family wedding, the event is the destination, and its relevance is 100%, but it’s not the same type of validation.
Therefore, the assertion that their impact is always significant does not account for varied travel objectives.

Let’s forget what we have already invested in attention in this idea of local events. Would we still consider a local event as a determinant factor for a destination if we started from scratch? In our country, Ivory Coast, if I have to organize family funerals in Bouaké, the presence of a mask festival will absolutely not influence my choice, because the priority is mourning.
The concept of local events as a permanent part of the validation process seems too rigid.
Sometimes, pure logistics – such as the availability of a large hall or reliable transportation for hundreds of people – far outweighs the appeal of a cultural manifestation.
We cannot let an event dictated by a cultural calendar sabotage the feasibility of a vital gathering.

The lightest expression of destination validation does not incorporate local events as a decisive factor from the start.
It is not a stable element of planning but rather a last-minute adjustment to save money or time.
For example, here in Portugal, if Porto is saturated due to a festival, we do not change destination, we simply look for another less expensive neighborhood or shift the visit by a day.
It is a low-energy cost solution, not a complete overhaul of the entire travel plan.

Attention is a bottleneck; how much real time can we ration for researching each small local event, especially when time is so limited?
For many, the school calendar or budget are the true arbiters of travel, which often overestimate the impact of local events.
A festival, even major, becomes secondary if airline tickets are prohibitive or hotels are fully booked, like my cousin who had to give up on New York for the Jazz Festival because of costs.
The window to travel is already so narrow, people prioritize being able to leave first.

The idea that local events are always a major factor in destination validation is an oversimplification; their weight is often conditional and depends on the traveler's objectives.
An event can drastically influence the atmosphere and costs, but for many, flexibility is king and other priorities take precedence.
In Senegal, for example, Tabaski increases prices, but if the goal is to visit family, the event is managed as a random factor, not a destination choice criterion.
The real question is the purpose of the trip, because the search for experience is different from family imperative.
There is a just middle ground between avoiding crowds and the obligation to travel.
