It's true that the surrounding constraints make all the difference, and a mechanism doesn't just work on its own. I'd argue that the cost of hiring new staff, for example, really only comes down if you also have a fast and reliable system for background checks. Without that, you're just waiting around longer, which costs money anyway.

The increase from 63 to 668 models on OpenRouter, while tracked, doesn't inherently mean a direct, unmediated expansion in what's truly available and useful; it suggests a feedback loop where tracking informs a selection regime that then dictates what gets integrated.
This isn't a simple linear input-output system, as there are crucial bottlenecks and gatekeeping mechanisms that filter what moves from being merely observed to actively deployed.
For example, OpenRouter might track hundreds of models, but if a model doesn't meet specific performance benchmarks or security protocols, it won't actually become 'available' for users, regardless of its existence.
The tracking provides data, but the platform's internal operational coupling with these metrics is what drives the actual market expansion, not just the raw count.

So, simply tracking model growth magically explains the explosion of AI models on OpenRouter, from 63 to 668? That's like saying my shopping list for dinner is why the agricoltore decided to plant more zucchini this year.
Here, in this local context of market gardens and real kitchens, we understand that observing a trend, like the increasing variety of cheeses in our local supermercato, is quite different from the complex factors that actually drive that variety.
It's the dairy farmers, the regional traditions, the actual consumer demand for ricotta or pecorino that produce the growth, not the person counting them.
The tracking itself is a useful report, but it's not the actual force behind the expansion; that comes from the creators and the users, not the clipboard.

It's easy to confuse tracking something with causing it, but here in Italy, we know that just because you're counting the tomatoes doesn't mean you made them grow.
While OpenRouter's reports show a clear increase in models, the actual expansion of available options comes from what's happening locally with developers and market demand, not the counting itself.
It's like saying my shopping list makes the pasta appear; no, the market's producers and my own cooking needs are the real drivers.
The tracking data is useful context, sure, but it's a report card, not the chef in the kitchen making things happen.

I disagree with that reply. As a HR Recruiter, I would make this conditional rather than decisive: the mechanism only carries if the surrounding constraints actually permit it.

OpenRouter, a leading LLM aggregator, tracks the rapid growth of available models and intelligence metrics.

Between April 2023 and October 2025, OpenRouter and Artificial Analysis documented significant increases in both open-source and closed-source models.

The number of models available on OpenRouter expanded from 63 in early 2024 to 668 by December 2025.

This data informs OpenRouter's daily research dataset, providing insights into the evolving LLM market.

OpenRouter offers a standardized API for accessing hundreds of models from various providers.

Examples

  • The cumulative number of models available on OpenRouter grew substantially.
  • Both open-source and closed-source models saw rapid increases in availability.
  • The number of inference providers also showed significant cumulative growth.
  • The intelligence index of newly released models demonstrated an upward trend.
  • OpenRouter immediately integrates new models upon their release by creators.

The 63 to 668 model expansion on OpenRouter by December 2025 is a massive 10-fold increase, but simply tracking growth doesn't cause it.
That's like saying a speedometer makes the car go faster; it's a measurement tool, not the engine itself.
We need to factor in other drivers, such as developer release rates—how many models are actually being created—and OpenRouter's onboarding efficiency, which could account for a significant percentage of the growth.
Attributing this expansion solely to tracking data gives it a much higher importance score than it likely deserves, perhaps 80% when it might be closer to 25% if we consider all variables.
For instance, if OpenRouter streamlined their integration process, that change alone could boost model availability by 200% regardless of how well it's tracked.
